          Caribbean man using English to express his own identity in language of dominant culture

          colonization in reverse

o   V.W. was shut out of a library

          he’s playing with a hybrid Eng, rhythm and idioms of Caribbean culture

          standardized/ Queens English was a way to label people

          using that image: inability o use it

          steal the language= do as he wants

          ungrammatical right form the beginning

          he’s resisting assimilation

o   use own rhythm

o   exploiting idea of being criminal

o   intentional ungrammatical

          playful, witty, accessible with serious subtext: opposed to notion of assimilation, making everyone the same

          peaceful protest
